Should Your Child Go to School? 

We care about the health and wellbeing of all of our students. If your child is not feeling well, evaluate their symptoms and use the following guidelines developed by the Minnesota Department of Health to decide if they should be sent/kept home from school. 

Fever

• Children with a fever of 100 degrees or higher should stay home for 24 hours fever free without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Vomiting and/or Diarrhea 

• Your child should remain at home until 24 hours after the last episode 

Strep Throat 

• Children may return to school 12–24 hours on antibiotics along with begin fever-free for 24 hours.

Rash 

• Check with your family physician before sending your child to school with a rash in which you do not know the cause. Children may return to school if the rash has been diagnosed as non-contagious or once the recommended treatment for the rash has been received. The diagnosis of a rash cannot be made at school. 

Head Lice

• It is recommended that your child receive treatment with a medicated shampoo following the discovery of live lice and/or nits. 

Pink Eye 

• Symptoms of pink eye will often include sticky discharge from the eye and a pink tint to the sclera (white portion of the eye). Contact your child’s physician for advice/treatment for these symptoms as prescription eye drops may be necessary. 

Cough

• Coughing that interferes with or limits your child's activity or play may need to be evaluated by his/her health care provider 

Nasal Drainage

• Thick, colored drainage from the nose may need to be evaluated by your child's health care provider 

Minnesotan students must prove that they are up-to-date with their immunizations or that they are exempt from the requirements for medical reasons or the beliefs of the parent/guardian.

  • For years, schools freely shared immunization data with clinics and public health agencies in order to ensure children were up-to-date with their shots. Recent increased attention on the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) has highlighted how this long-standing practice is not allowable.

    FERPA does not allow schools to share immunization or other health data with anyone outside the school without patient or parent/guardian consent. If a health care provider is seeking immunization data on a patient from the school, they must get consent from the patient or their parent/guardian. This federal law overrides the Minnesota law that allows schools, health care providers, and selected others to share immunization data.

    Immunization records on file for current and former students (graduated within the past 6 years) can be requested by using the Immunization Record Request Form below. Please note that requests sent during the summer months may take up to 2 weeks to receive.

An individualized plan allows for your student’s health issue (examples: asthma, allergies, seizures and other chronic health issues) to be acknowledged and planned for accordingly. The action plans assist the health care staff in providing safe, individualized care to your student during the school day should the need arise.

Please bring the completed action plan(s) to the health office in the building your student will be attending on the the first day of school. Your own clinic may have forms they prefer to use and that is acceptable for school use.

For the safety of students, it is recommended that medication be given at home whenever possible. If medication must be given during school hours, we want you to be informed of the following school medication policies. 

All medications, prescription and over-the-counter require a parent signature.

Physical examinations are highly recommended before your child enters kindergarten and 7th grade.

If your child plans to be involved in a school sport, physical examinations are required and must be on filed in the school health office AFTER they have been received by the Activities Office.  For more information please see the Activities and Athletic page.

As a service to the community, Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools has contracted with Student Assurance Services Incorporated to provide information regarding student accident insurance for your child. This is a valuable option to parents/guardians who, because of various reasons, do not have health insurance. It is also an excellent way to supplement your health insurance if you have a large deductible or co-insurance, including HSA plans.
